Environment & Sustainability
PNG Forest Products is the only company in Papua New Guinea that has achieved PEFC Chain of Custody certification. PEFC, (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), is an international organisation based in Switzerland that promotes sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. PNGFP’s Chain of Custody certification provides independent, verified assurance that the forest-based material contained in our products originates from sources which are legal, non-controversial, and socially responsible.
PNGFP Environmental Policy
PNG Forest Products is the only company in Papua New Guinea that has achieved PEFC Chain of Custody accreditation. PEFC, (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), is an international organisation that promotes socially responsible, legal, non-controversial forest management through independent third-party certification. Based in Switzerland, it is the largest forest certification system in the world, covering about two-thirds of the planet’s certified forest area. PNGFP’s Chain of Custody certification demonstrates a commitment to sustainable forest management that is unique in PNG.
PNGFP also works in conjunction with the PNG Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to ensure that the highest standards and best environmental practices are maintained at all times. As part of their compliance with PEFC certification, PNGFP’s environmental practices are audited annually and DEC conducts yearly inspections as part of their operating permit conditions.
Timber – The Ultimate Renewable
Timber is renewable, recyclable, waste efficient, biodegradable, non-toxic and it locks carbon away. With a lower net environmental impact than most other building materials, timber is a greenhouse positive product that contributes to the long term reduction of carbon emissions, thus positively addressing climate change.
Although some CO2 is released during the sawing and milling of timber, the net effect is that 8.3kg of CO2 is absorbed during both the growth and production of timber. Substituting a cubic metre of wood for other construction materials like concrete, blocks or bricks, results in approximately 1 tonne of CO2 savings.
Furthermore, the process of manufacturing timber uses far less fossil fuel energy per unit volume than steel, concrete, or aluminium timber; so timber has a very low carbon footprint compared to most other building materials. PNGFP’s hydro-powered manufacturing facilities mean that our products have an almost zero carbon footprint.
PNGFP Hydro
As a further commitment to sustainability, PNGFP’s manufacturing facilities are powered by our own Hydro Power stations. Operating three Hydro Power stations with a fourth in development, PNGFP is the only Independent Power Producer in the country that supplies hydro power to PNG Power. This combination of renewable timber resources, processed with sustainable hydro power, makes PNGFP arguably the greenest manufacturing company in the region.
